The internet made turmeric latte a trend; the tradition behind it is more precise. Here is the clinic’s version — proportions, timing, and who should skip it.
Haldi doodh predates its hashtag by several centuries. Done properly it is a gentle evening anti-inflammatory and a sleep aid; done carelessly it is warm yellow milk.
The clinic recipe: a cup of whole milk (or a rich plant milk), a quarter teaspoon of good turmeric, a pinch of freshly ground black pepper — piperine is what carries curcumin into the blood — and a small crush of green cardamom. Warm gently; never boil hard. Sweeten, if at all, with a little jaggery off the heat.
Timing matters: forty minutes before sleep, not with dinner. And it is not for everyone — high Pitta constitutions in hot weather, and anyone on blood-thinning medication, should ask their physician first.
One cup, most evenings, through the cold months. Consistency — as always in this tradition — is the active ingredient.
